About Antigone
A Greek tragedy play written by Sophocles circa 442 BC. In Greek legend, Antigone (An-tih-gone-ay) is the daughter born of the unwittingly incestuous union of Oedipus and his mother, Jocasta. The play is about Antigone’s disobedience of ruler Creon’s rules when she insists on burying her brother, Polyneices. There are themes of civil disobedience, morality, loyalty, authority, and gender. Antigone is loyal to the individual while Creon is loyal to the state.
